The Undertale Original Soundtrack was composed by Toby Fox for the indie RPG Undertale. If you haven’t already played the game then stop reading this and go buy it, as it’s probably the best game I’ve played in quite a few years. Anyway, lets get into the music. Much like the game, the range of emotion in this album is massive. It’s exiting, calm, strange, silly, creepy, and just flat out depressing. I’ve never gone from wanting to dance to wanting to cry as quickly as this music can make me. Every song has it’s own unique feel, and are all equally wonderful. This is particularly impressive as there are 101 songs on the album. I’ve also found it to be great inspiration for writing and drawing.
Fallen Down/Reprise/Empty House: The first time I heard Fallen Down, I was blown away. It’s such a unique song. The mix of lo-fi piano and heavy, slow bass creates such a creepy, haunting atmosphere. And it’s slowed down, even bass-heavier version, ‘Empty House’, I swear I almost cried when I heard it.
Home: A very comforting, peaceful track. The calming acoustic guitar always makes me feel very at ‘home’. HAHAHAHA, haha, ha… jokes….
Snowy: Such a cute little track. A nice mix of violin and piano. It creates the perfect atmosphere for playing in the snow.
Dating Start!: Just as ridiculous and adorable as the portion of the game it’s in.
Tem Shop: I think the amount of times I’ve listened to this song speaks deeply about me as a person. Help me.
Uwa!! So HEATS!!♫: Very short and odd song. Though there’s something inexplicably charming about this tack that caught my attention.
It’s Raining Somewhere Else: A particularly interesting track. It opens with ambient rainy city sounds and soft piano then transitions into a sort of ‘fancy elevator music’. Like the kind of elevator music that makes you take a trip down to the snack machine even though you just ate. You know the kind.
Death By Glamour: The song is literally called ‘Death by Glamour’, do I really need to say more?
Undertale: This is probably the best song I’ve heard in at least a year, where do I even start? It opens with calm acoustic guitar, followed by a simple beat, then comes the piano, slowly building into it’s full sound. Such an epic track, I get chills every time I listen to it. Easily the best song on this album.
Your Best Nightmare: This track switches from complete nightmare to happy instantly and with no warning, and that laugh at the beginning terrifies me every time. This song is literally made of nightmares.
MEGALOVANIA: A reoccurring song in Toby’s work, and with good reason. Simultaneously makes you feel like something insane is about to start and that everything is coming to an end. I also recommend you listen to the metal cover of this song. Epic.
All in all, this is a fantastic album, regardless of whether or not you’re a fan of the game. Though you really should be a fan of the game.
